Mother's Day

Harris

Location: NY, NY

Favorite Flavor: Whichever I am currently using.

If you could travel back in time, what era would you live in? The Jurassic Era.

What’s your favorite meal? Do you cook?: Steak...no, I don’t cook (wait, does microwaving count?)

Three things you cannot live without…Josie (wife), Kilo (dog), breathing.

I am a member of the Coffee-mate Brew Crew.

As I mentioned in a previous blog, my wife, Josie, gave birth to our first daughter, Zadie Reece Bloom on January 4th, 2011. Needless to say, it’s been a happy, though slightly crazy, 2011 in the Bloom household.

There really is nothing like holding your infant daughter in your hands, or, if there is, I haven’t found it yet. Proud parents that we are, our Facebook pages have become virtual photo books of Zadie for the world to see. Josie told me I went a little too far when I posted her new Social Security card (Like someone’s going to steal an infant’s identity! Then again, Zadie does have better credit than I do).

As much fun as it’s been, having a baby daughter is a lot of work, or so my wife told me since she’s been home with Zadie for a few months while I try to hold off American Express, Con Ed, Verizon, …you get the idea.

A few Wednesdays ago, Josie had to be out of the apartment for a few hours so I volunteered to take off a half day from work to play with Zadie.

“I can get my dad to come over,” Josie said, unsure of my solo, baby care abilities.

“Please, I got it,” I confidently stated, while lifting Zadie above my head. “Piece of cake!”

“Okay, but it’s not as easy as you think.”

“Pffft! Whatever!” I replied, as I pictured me watching TV, while sipping a cup of coffee (with French Vanilla Coffee mate) with one hand and gently rocking Zadie’s bassinet with the other.

Fast forward to Black Wednesday, as it shall forever be known…

About an hour after Josie left, Zadie started crying.

“I know what the problem is…” I optimistically opined, while carrying her to the changing table. And sure enough, I was correct. A wet diaper. As soon as I changed her, Zadie stopped crying. Piece of cake!

Then, she started crying again.

“Hmmm, are we hungry?” I asked.

I fed her the normal (four ounces) and she stopped crying. Piece of ca…

She started crying again.

“Oh, I know!” I exclaimed, still feeling pretty confident, “Someone needs to burp!” So, I burped her. And, like magic, she stopped… Okay, she stopped for a second and then started crying again. Hmmm…

I thought maybe her diaper needed to be changed again, so I checked, and sure enough, it was a mess...such a mess that I needed to cut Zadie out of her onsie. And, as I expected at this point, she kept crying.

I tried walking around the apartment with her, sitting, and bouncing her on my knee, making funny faces and singing songs to her, and tried giving her more milk. And the crying continued.

I was trying everything as I knew Josie was about to come home, and I didn’t want her to think I was incompetent. And then Josie came home.

After explaining the situation, Josie asked, “Did you try just laying her down?”

“Umm, no.”

“She’s probably just tired.”

We laid Zadie in her bassinet. Within two minutes, she was asleep.

I think the old TV sitcom had it wrong, it’s Mother’s that knows best.

Happy Mother’s Day!
