Java Girl's Journey

Yamaneika

Location: NY, NY

Favorite Flavor: French Vanilla

If you could travel back in time, what era would you live in? 1920s. I love the style, music, and elegance of that time.

What’s your favorite meal? Do you cook?: My favorite meal is baked chicken w/ saffron rice and gravy or baked salmon w/ wild rice and mac&cheese.

Three things you cannot live without… Coffee, Cats, Books.

I am a member of the Coffee-mate Brew Crew.

When I was a kid people used to say, “Never give a child coffee, the caffeine is too much;” well, my grandmother was not one to listen to people. Every morning she would have a cup of coffee: black, two sugars and no cream. Even though the taste was not appealing to me, I would join her. I mean, what five-year-old doesn’t want to be like their grandma? Okay, plenty, but my grandma was cool. I loved sitting with her at the kitchen table, legs crossed, and coffee mug in hand. It was magical. For in my five-year-old world she was the only person who could manage the right index, middle finger grip on the handle while the rest of the fingers waited in the background, sadden that they could only be spectators to this finger show.

We continued this ritual, my grandma and I, for many years. We would sit and drink two or three cups, gabbing like we were old friends. So, it’s no wonder that twenty-six years later and a little hyper-activity later, I still love to drink coffee!

Now that I’m on my own trying to make a life for myself as a student and performer, I do my best to emulate my grandmother. Coffee rituals are a big part of my life with my friends. We love to use coffee as the excuse to meet up and analyze everything going on with our lives (to death). I actually introduced Coffee-mate to my friends, who were hesitant at first since they knew of my die-hard “no cream” tradition with my grandmother, but eventually they gave in (just like me).

My first introduction to Coffee-mate came when I was temping for a financial firm that spared no expense on the amenities to their office. They had a state-of-the-art break room, with all the bells and whistles. This included a "coffee dressing" station filled with gourmet coffee and every variety of Coffee-mate flavor. As a temp, I wanted to make the best of my time there, so you can believe that I tried all the flavors and, at times, gulped down 3 cups of coffee in one setting (and three more on my next break). That assignment lasted only a few months, but the effects were lasting. Even though I’m always up to trying a new flavor, I always keep Amaretto and Coconut Crème in stock. And when it’s available, I’ll keep a few bottles of Caramel Apple around.

And here we are today. Old coffee traditions meeting new. I make all my girlfriends try a new Coffee-mate flavor when they come over for gab fests. They have created a host of funny names for me, which I won’t share in this blog, but rest assured, their lives are better because of me.

As for Grandma, we continue to have our morning coffee when I visit, only this time Coffee-mate is there too! Who says I can’t teach a thing or two to her.

I love how you captured your grandmother's spirit!! It's so sweet that you were able to add your flavor to the family ritual :)

I feel sooooo lucky to have Coffeemate at my office! Especially since the coffee here doesn't come CLOSE to my own grandma's home-made brew. LOL. Thanx 4 sharing your story!

This reminds me of when I used to go over to my grandmother's house every Thursday to have dinner. After dinner, we would always chat and drink a cup of coffee. Brings back good memories :)
