A Match Made in Haven

If you could travel back in time, what era would you live in? I like where I am now. Facebook. iPhones. Movies on Demand.

How do you unwind after a long day? DVR'd TV with my husband, who always makes me laugh.

Three things you cannot live without…My family, my iPhone, my coffee.

I am a member of the Coffee-mate Brew Crew.

Remember the movie where the handsome hero’s sole purpose in life (other than finding true love) is to get funding for a super commuter train in grunge-era Seattle? “But if you give them great coffee…and you give them great music…” he keeps saying when people dismiss his idea.

I think of this line all the time, even though my “commute” as a work-from-home mom is as simple as get out of bed, walk down the stairs, and turn on the computer. I think of it because, while I’m not a “commuter” in the traditional sense, I depend on those same two things to transport me every day.

Whether I’m lucky enough to actually have 15 minutes to myself, or I’m listening to my iPod while washing dishes, pushing a stroller, or driving the kids to a play date, coffee + music = my easy, everyday escape.

Now I’m not talking my first cup of coffee—the one I guzzle more than sip in desperation at 5am. I’m referring to morning or mid-afternoon, when I feel like I’ve been up since forever (and usually have been).

This second or (gulp) third cup is more of a reward than a must-have. An opportunity to savor, not devour. A chance to carefully consider a Coffee-mate flavor—and selection of tunes—to suit my taste and mood, like Vanilla Chai Spice if I’m looking for a little zen, or White Chocolate Caramel Latte if I’m feeling indulgent.

The music is usually of the alternative/indie rock variety, not only because I love it, but because it takes me back to a time in my life that was completely opposite of what it is now. A time when I could just sit in my room or drive around with friends or go to an 11pm concert with worries as simple as “Where am I going to hang out tonight?” or “When are they going to play my favorite song? or “If I venture into that mosh pit, will I break my nose?”

Of course, life didn’t seem easy back then—and from a 17-year-old’s perspective, I guess it wasn’t—but the older, more exhausted, more caffeinated me knows better…and sometimes, would give anything to live it all over again.

And yet, I wouldn’t—not really—want to give up the chance to laugh at my husband’s sarcastic jokes or watch my sons’ delight at spotting a bulldozer, or enjoy the kind of confidence you’ve earned personally and professionally once you reach your thirties.

But thankfully, I don’t have to. Because as long as I have my good coffee…and my good music, I can take a trip back to the 90s (or anywhere but here) any time I want.

Now it’s your turn. Tell me, do you like your coffee with a side of great sounds? Who are your listening favorites? And which songs would you put on a Coffee-mate inspired playlist?

As a member of the Coffeemate Brew Crew, I love relaxing with a cup of coffee. Just a few minutes of relaxation and Coffeemate coffee can make your whole day better. I like to listen to Taylor Swift and sing a little and forget my worries.
